Die Taylors führen ein harmonisches Familienleben. Mit ihren beiden Kindern entspannen sie sich für ein paar Tage am Grand Canyon. Mikey (David Mazouz), der jüngere Sohn, ist Autist und lebt in einer eigenen Welt. Er findet seltsame Steine und nimmt sie als Souvenir mit. Zuhause häufen sich mysteriöse Vorfälle für die Peter Taylor (Kevin Bacon) und seine Frau (Radha Mitchell) zunächst noch rationale Erklärungen finden. Doch schleichend bekommt das idyllische Familienleben Risse und die Taylors finden sich in einem Albtraum wieder. Böse Geister lauern im Haus, vor denen es kein Entrinnen zu geben scheint...
